Tour of Tasmania

06 2013 Tasmania Stg5 NicholasKATSONIS 1
The Tour of Tasmania finished up last week and CharterMason Drapac Development Team Principal Leigh Parsons gives us a recap of the weeks events.

The Tour of Tasmania was dominated by Huon-Genesis and Drapac Professional Cycling. Huon-Genesis set the bar very high from stage 1 where they put more than 1:40 into the field. From then on Drapac gave it everything to claw back that lead but ultimately to no avail. Congratulations to Huon-Genesis for their overall win, and to Drapac for their multiple stage wins and podiums during the tour.

CMDDT put in a strong performance at ToT13 the highlight for CMDDT was an excellent 8th on GC by Jason Spencer. He was the highest placed non-Huon Genesis, or Drapac rider which is an outstanding effort considering most of those riders are heading off to Pro Continental or Pro Tour contracts in 2014. It caps off a great season for Jason who currently holds the leaders jersey in the Victorian Road Series. This sort of result is not achieved by one rider alone and all of the team members contributed to Jason’s success throughout the tour.

Jason’s result was setup by an excellent team time trial in Stage 1, where CMDDT finished 3rd, only 4 seconds out of 2nd place. The class of our climbers really showed through during this stage, with the team finishing with 5 of the 8 riders all together. Brilliant rides by Nic Katsonis who managed to hang on to the more noted of our climbers and Sam Crome who, after getting dropped with 3kms to go, rode back onto the bunch with a massive effort.

My personal highlight for the tour was Nic Katsonis (pictured above). Nic is our youngest rider, having turned 19 during the tour. From the start of the season, he has matured from a good A grade club rider, who initially struggled with taking the step into the NRS. At the Tour of Tasmania, Nic managed to come 10th in the young rider classification, which is a huge endorsement to his ability and work ethic. Hopefully Nic can take his new found confidence to continue to impress in coming years.

A special thank you to SKCC mega stars Nick Bensley (pictured below) and Andy Naylor who both made great contributions to the team over the week. It is great to be able to offer the opportunity to SKCC riders to play a part at the top level of the sport in Australia.
