I started my cycling career in late 2008, leaving behind a successful running and triathlon career, joining a local cycling club and competing in the local and state bike races. Since then, I have competed in several high profile Australian races such as The Herald Sun Tour and The Tour of Bright as well as San Dimas Stage Rage in California USA.
I used to compete in Athletics as a runner, however injuries forced me to abandon running and find another sport... so I took up cycling.
Whilst training and competing in Triathlons, I realised that I preferred cycling to swimming and running and started training specifically for cycling leading up to the 2009/10 Criterion season.
I'm a 40 something, mother of two who returned to recreational cycling for fitness and weight loss in 2006...I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it! My first race was late 2007 when I participated in an SKCC Coffee Crit (now known as Latte Laps) session with Rob Crowe. That was it, I was hooked! Cycling has taken over my life.
I come from a mountain biking background, competing in National XC races from 2002 to 2006. I then had a couple of years of very little racing and training while I finished writing my PhD thesis and moved interstate a couple of times. Throughout 2008 and up to May 2009 I raced several mountain biking enduros and mountain biking marathons. This year I am taking a complete break from mountain bike racing and trying out road racing, having previously only ever dabbled in it for training purposes.
I think I may have earned myself a new nickname after being quite ‘vocal’ at the recent Phillip Island race but no-one’s told me what it is! I started cycling while recovering from a running injury in 2006 when some friends convinced me to join them on the Wednesday morning SKCC girls ride. I spent the next couple of years riding socially and drinking lots of coffee. Last year I ramped up my training and competed in a number of club races. At the moment, I am building up my racing experience with a view to competing in national level races before the end of the year. I love the adrenalin and sense of achievement that you get from cycling, whether riding with friends or racing.
